Listen and Vote on the Title Song / New CD
The survey results are in…and so are the comments, suggestions, and two bits worth from nearly 1,000 of you. Thanks to all who participated! You can scroll down to get the results and some selected comments from the survey. (Note: these are only about 10% of the comments received…)
But first…
LISTEN AND VOTE: TITLE SONG VERSIONS 1 AND 2
Here are two versions of the title song for my upcoming CD, Analog Brain In A Digital World. I’d love to know which one you prefer. Please listen to both, and then let me know your choice in the comment box at the bottom of this post. (If you want to be anonymous just use a fake name and email.) Thanks!
You’ll notice some differences in the two versions, like audience size and lyrics. Clicking the link will probably take you to another window, so after the song ends just hit the “back” button on your computer and it’ll bring you back here to hear #2.
#1: analog-brain-in-a-digital-world-eq.mp3
The second version has about a minute of my chatter before the song starts that we haven’t yet edited out. (Sorry!) Just ignore that and try to compare the song itself with #1. This one has a more intimate audience.
#2: 01-analog-brain-in-a-digital-world.mp3
SURVEY RESULTS:
- Over 80% of you still prefer CDs (with liner notes and lyrics) to digital downloads! This amazed me, in a good way. So we’ll release it in both formats.
- As for the next offering from me, an equal number of you voted for a new comedy CD and a new heartfelt songs CD. In 3rd and 4th place were a live-performance DVD and a new book. A new songbook was 5th. So that’s the order I plan to work on ‘em.
- The clear winner in the comedy CD title was Analog Brain In A Digital World. It ran about 50% higher than Still Saving The World From Whiny Victim Love Songs. In 3rd place was Humor, Laughter, Harmony, and Life. 4th was A-Musing Musical Mystic.
- Those of you wanting songbooks had widely varying format preferences. So I’m tabling that till I have time do think about it.

COMMENTS ON CD TITLES:
“Humor, Laughter Harmony and Life” is BORING…DON’T USE!! It may cause irreparable damage to your career!
All your choices are lame.
But seriously, make it funny - the title, I mean. Humor, Laughter, harmony and Life, sounds like the headings in a file cabinet.
“Analog Brain” and “Still Saving” use more “tangible” language, while the other three are conceptual language, which I don’t think works for a title. “A-musing” is a powerful little play on words I like very much, so it must be used elsewhere.
5 choices with 4 possible answers? Greg, Is this some kind of psychological test?
Greg can’t count.
COMMENTS ON DIGITAL DOWNLOADS VS CDs
Greg … I am of the OLD school (now almost 60 … how did that happen) … so if you are not doing vinyl … then for me it is fun to have a CD … but trust me … this is very S Q U A R E … and CD’s are ROUND!
I so appreciate the lyrics included, such a joy for those of us hearing impaired.
old school low tech.
I download my music mostly, but if your computer crashes, like mine has just done when the motherboard died, all your data can be compromised. With a CD, at least I can reload to my iPhone.
I hate to admit that I don’t even know how to download music.
Call me old fashioned, but I need the CD so I can transfer it to a cassette for listening to in my van.
I still love having the actual CD or DVD. However I download them to computer and put on my IPOD so would be fine with downloaded only. Old habits die hard!!!
I still have and play my vinyl although I do take advantage of free downloads to my computer.
You can burn ‘em cheaper than I can.
A bit of personal communication to/with the audience/fans is always appreciated. Ummm…not TOO personal, boxers or briefs would be TMI. [Huh??]
I’m a technical neanderthal woman.
I am technologically challenged and I would NEVER put a credit card number on the internet anyway.
C’mon! I still have my 8-track player………
I’ll download if i can still get the liner notes, etc, too…
Depends on the situation. I have one of your CD’s, but I prefer to get stuff from Itunes. Please give us the chance to hear the album prior to buying it…
I like a booklet with CD that has lyrics, info about song-writer(s) and musicians.
CDs, but consider the source here - I’m still calling them “albums” Downloading is no doubt the way to go these days.
I am in an in-between stage of cd’s and i-pod. I don’t know how to answer the above question.
I’m old-fashioned and very tactile!
I am still old fashioned, don’t have the whole download thing mastered and then each time I get a new computer or software it is different.
I am too ignorant of all this electronic technology to answer this question.
Oh God, this stuff makes my stomach hurt! I hope everybody says, “CDs that we pay full price for with all the packaging and liner notes. It’s so worth it!” [from Jana Stanfield]
COMMENTS ON WHICH NEW OFFERINGS YOU’D BE INTERESTED IN:
A Polish lullaby that ends in…Boom tadiyada Boom tadiyada…
Something along the lines of the White Album would be nice.
I say… Follow Your Bliss, Baby! Forget what I’d buy. What do you ache to create?
A Children’s Album, please.
The CD studio recording would really benefit from Bob Trussell’s vocal harmonies and gut-bucket blues riffs. [from Bob Trussell]
I personally like what you did with The Grand Design: one CD of live humor/comedy and the other with inspirational songs. I also liked your book, but it was way too short for the $.
11.5 inch platform shoes, spandex jumpsuit, red and yellow striped cape, and a chair shaped like a globe.
An advice column!
My apologies, but I’m not familiar with your work so I’m probably not the best person to ask.
a mix of humor/comedy songs and inspirational songs — that would REALLY be best!
What would really be nice is an uplifting laugh till the economy gets better.
Your live stuff really comes across stronger than your recorded stuff (my opinion only).
A DVD with your songwriting friend, golfing and frisbee buddy. [from Dr. Bowen White, aka Dr. Jerko]
CD of songs connecting the evolutionary spiritual earth centered my large self.
Have you heard the Muppet Christmas with John Denver? Not enough fun Christmas music out there. You could do it!
Quantum physics played against consciousness jokes.
Can you come hang around my house for a while?
Get to work!

I like version 1 a WHOLE lot more!!!
I’m glad you said, “If you want to be anonymous just use a fake name and email.”
August 5th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
version 2
I LOVE what you do
keep it up
August 5th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
I like version 2 -we’re on to tweeting and twittering. I’m not, but have a vision of the future -keep on singing and laughing -love your stuff. Lynn
August 5th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
I prefer version # 2 . Hey we really miss you here in the Cayman Islands. Okay…..I may be the only one left here from days gone by.
Hope you are well.
Darren
August 5th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
I like the personal comments in version 2, but I like the audience reactions better in version 1. If combining is not possible, I’d go with version 1.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
I like the cell phone video chat at the start of #1 but I like the rest of #2 (after goof repair)…put them together and what have you got? Bibbity bobbity boo!
August 5th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
I like version two better. Faster beat, makes it seem more comical. As opposed to the whiny #1 version.
Thanks for letting me put my 2 songs worth in
August 5th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
I prefer the lyrics and delivery of version 2 although usually I like studio recordings better than live (the audience noise gets old fast when you like the song well enough to replay it). Even though there is less audience participation in version 1, version 2 is better.
I’m looking forward to the new CD, thank you for being who you are and doing the stuff only you can do.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
I like them both but vote for version 2. I like the tweet/twitter reference. Also, you got it right about the tech support from Bombay!
Jennifer
August 5th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
I loved version #1. I just had to send it to my out of state friends to hear…’cause all this tech stuff is just driving me nuts. Now i know how my grandparents felt.
thanks for putting it to music so wonderfully…..
August 5th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
I agree with Gaila. I like the leadin on #1, but your voice is stronger and clearer on #2, and I like the ending on #2. Can they be merged a little?
August 5th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
I choose #1 - clearer, more finished sound and easier to hear. Loved the intro - may you always appear on YouTube Greg - it’s always a compliment.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
All right, I’m confused. MEILING says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. ????. Did I do something wrong? I really do have an anolog brain in a digital world.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Either works for me but I kinda fancy the “rough cut” version. Less formal more funny.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
I like V2.0 better if you edit out the flubbed beginning of the song. V1.0 sounds like it’s in a big hall and V2.0 sounds like it’s in an intimate club setting.
I also like that V2.O has tweets and twitter, which, I guess, means, everything’s up to date in Kansas City.
Hugh
August 5th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
i totaly preferred version #1. was i influenced by “first heard-preferred” mentality? who knows? honestly, i think something about tweeting and twittering just turned me off. call me old-fashioned, i think we’re going way too far using impersonal means to stay personally connected…personally.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Definitely liked Version 1 best. Looking forward to seeing you in Pleasant Hill on Aug. 21st!!
August 5th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
Version 2…faster, more upbeat.
Love hearing your vision of the world. You make me smile and sometimes laugh out loud.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
I listened to both options twice just to be sure, and I like the way #2 came out better than #1. I feel you sound more relaxed and fun in #2. That is the one with the extra verbiage and the more intimate setting.
August 5th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Great song, Greg. I prefer version 1 — easier to listen to and follow. Keep ‘em coming!
August 5th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Both are good but #2 seems more personal and human. Keep up the good work.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
I like your introduction on #1.I like the reference to Twitter in #2, but Twitter is a fad, so no mention of “tweets” is just fine. I mean, you mention Yahoo!, and Yahoo! is as outdated as 1 gigbite harddrives. Anyway, the audience in #1 was better than #2: maybe they were a part of that multi-tasking study you mentioned at the end of #2, which you have to keep. Go with #1 followed by the banter in #2. Really, it’s not worth the Twitter mention to dump on #1. Yes, I intended that pun.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
#2 - I saw you in Vero Beach in a small crowd and this version reminded me of that more personal environment. Thanks for the ongoing grins and giggles! And please come back to Florida…….
August 5th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Definitely numero uno.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
I liked parts of both… but since I can only choose one, I choose #2.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
I could not open neither of them. What does that mean? Help!!
August 5th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
#2 sounds like a better range for your voice. I liked the illiteration with the lyrics. Very funny song. Keep up the good work
August 5th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
I like version one better… bigger energy feedback loop with audience.
August 5th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
I think you sound better on #2. Love the song!
August 5th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
You’re going to have a hard time with this, since the opinions of which version is best are so evenly divided. My vote is for Version 1.
August 5th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
We BOTH thought version #2 was better. The lyrics are much clearer, for one. For 2, I enjoyed the banter with your audience on #2, but the end does need to be clipped a bit. #1 was good, solid beginning. But the more intimate audience in #2 wins out.
MAKE sure that whichever one you DON’T use gets saved for your “live” CD. That way, we get ‘em BOTH!!!
August 5th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
#2; you sound like you are having more fun than on #1
August 5th, 2009 at 6:32 pm
Definitely, 2nd is etter. Good song! Crazy world. Jay
August 5th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
I prefer version #1 by quite a bit. I like it much better than the singing style/laugh track (audience?) of version #2.
August 5th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
Jesus Greg, even as a supposed to be hip folk DJ, I don’t even know how to download and play mp3’s on the air.. Keep it simple.. CD with lyrics…oh, and Bob Trussell may be able to put some back up harmonies on stuff, but remember.. I AM the Army of Harmony!
August 5th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
I like #l best. I am not a big fan of audience loud laughter. I like to decide when I want to laugh (and most of your stuff is laughable….oh no, that didn’t come out right). Love your work and while I enjoy your humor, the serious stuff is wonderful.
August 5th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
You’re definitely going to have a tough time with this since you can’t please everyone. I personally liked #2 better — it was cleaner, the lyrics seemed tighter (I don’t know if Twitter is a fad, but it’s certainly a new technology that we have to learn!) and the audience and atmosphere a little warmer.
Looking forward to hosting you in St. Louis again soon!
August 5th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
I prefer #2. Thanks for your music!
August 5th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Track #1 sounded more fun to me. If you do a double disk, make whichever one you don’t use a hidden track on the other.
August 5th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
My analog brain at first thought I was ’sposed to squeeze my street, city, state, and zip into that second box, but I settled on e-mail instead. I honestly like things about both so much it is hard to choose. The reverb/concert hall quality of # 1 is definitely my preference for the “roundness” of the performance and the “presence” of the lyrics in # 2 has merit for the intimacy it provides. The different lyrics make me want to meld the two, the intro to # 1 was my favorite, as well as the epilogue to #2. If I must choose, it would be # 1, but I am content with either. You couldn’t just do a third and combine all those features as another re-write? Yahoo and You Tube both! How can you leave either out! Good thing I’m not your producer, you never get anything published! BTW do you know my friend Mac Macanally?
I think you guys would sound great together. Feel free to trim my verbosity.
August 5th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
I like version 2. It sounded more like your style, and the lyrics seemed to flow better than number 1. Glad to hear the new album’s coming out! Good luck mixing!
August 5th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
Very funny, challenging song–prefer number two–more personal, and I like the stops (pauses)–less rigidity.
August 5th, 2009 at 11:13 pm
for reasons completely unknown to me,
i prefer the second version.,…great lyrics, great song, by the way.
August 6th, 2009 at 12:12 am
# 1 Gets my vote, mainly for the lead-in!
The beginning of #2 is a turnoff! .
I agree with the folks who say merge’em!
August 6th, 2009 at 12:15 am
I liked version 2! Very cute!
August 6th, 2009 at 8:05 am
My vote is most definitely for Version 2 although I like the lead in to Version 1.
I love all your songs and Version 2 made me feel like we were back together in each others presence in the same room.
Keep up your usual good work, and as you always say, “Be Silly”. Hope to see you back soon in NC
August 6th, 2009 at 9:13 am
#2 gets my vote, seemed more natural and had more of your personal style. That personal style is what keeps people listening to you.. Doing a third version, as some suggested is not a bad idea, you know it will be as you want then!
August 6th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Great song! I would prefer a studio version to the live recordings but if you are considering actually using one of these live recordings I like #1 better… great lead in and a strong performance. As for the lyrics, I prefer #2. I would, however, loose the lines between “stopped for directions…” and …isn’t that weird” for a studio version.
August 6th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Reading all these comments was almost as much fun as listening to YOU! We might not agree on which version is better, but one thing is perfectly clear — we love your humor, your music, and your irreverent spirituality! You rock, Greg!!!
August 6th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Greg, I thought your musicality, pitch, voice tone, flow of lyrics, upbeat rhythm, etc. came through more pleasingly in the second version. #2 all the way!
August 6th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
After the second time through each song, I’m still definitely for version number two still, just with more justification. The lyrics worked better in V2. It made more sense that you’d be on with tech support when your ipod wasn’t synching with your printer, (also, this draws more empathy from crowd b/c non-synching situations are more stressful and stand out more in memory as an “I can relate” situation) than in V1 when you said it was spitting out photos. Also, V2 had better comedic timing on the Segway story and at the end on the “if’s” that lead up to saying our brain is outdated. I liked the guitar accompaniment better in V2 as well; it was more upbeat and lively and supported the comic delivery more than in V1. I’m still definitely for using version TWO!
August 6th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
I have loved version 1 since the first time I heard it awhile back. After listening to both, it is still my favorite of the two.
August 7th, 2009 at 7:12 am
Version 2 is my favorite. It’s like sitting in the room with you!
Keep singing!
August 7th, 2009 at 8:19 am
Version 2. Hope to see you in FL soon. Come make us laugh.
August 7th, 2009 at 10:13 am
Both versions were terrific, but even after the shaky start, I gotta go with Number Two (hmmm, that doesn’t quite sound right, does it?)
August 7th, 2009 at 10:22 am
If not a combined version then definitely #2!
August 8th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
very fun tune…i say #1…you don’t really need the intro; song speaks for itself…plus i think the crowd is better earlier in the tune…gets you hooked in faster.
August 16th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
# 2 is my pick
August 21st, 2009 at 2:15 pm
I liked them both but #2 is my choice.
August 25th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
Version 2! Stronger vocals, better vocal/guitar sync, funnier wording. One content comment, though. Who’s ever going to believe a guy would stop for directions?
September 2nd, 2009 at 6:18 pm
I liked #2 best, Greg. Do you ever plan to go back to tour in Ireland? I long for a draft Guiness and an ear full of traditional Irish music. Or maybe another limerick contest on a rainy morning sitting in a pub drinking Irish Cream. Jim
September 2nd, 2009 at 8:56 pm
I love No. 1 best.
September 2nd, 2009 at 10:22 pm
Cosmic Comic Troubadour or better yet Comic Cosmic Consciousness
September 3rd, 2009 at 11:37 pm
I prefer #2. Somehow, the audience noise is not so disruptive in that version. (I still prefer studio versions to live.)
I can definitely identify with this song, even though I live in a very analog community. Daily someone asks about my bluetooth: “What’s that funny black thing in your ear, a hearing aid?”
September 5th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Your email got lost in spam. Fished it out and listened a few times. #2 flows better, less strain in your voice. Or maybe it was my brain strain trying to hear all the lyrics in #1. A month ago, Jennifer up above explained it all perfectly.
September 7th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Definitely #2
just cut the false start………
Hope to see you in Florida
